@ Boccelli's, August 20

Hey mama

HEY MAMA (noun): a washboard rock & roll experience.

THE STORY:

Little did Carlos Santana know that he would have so much to
do with the chance meeting of Avi Salloway and Celia
Woodsmith. After breaking into a college dorm, to find the
man responsible for wailing electric guitar sounds, Celia’s
roommate introduced Avi to one powerhouse of a woman. Their
creative chemistry was quickly realized which lead to
formation of Avi & Celia. Weaving tours in and out of their
exam schedule, they built up a strong grassroots following
throughout the Northeast. They released their first CD (Off
the Floor, 2007) as seniors at the University of Vermont.

Immediately following graduation and a southern tour, they
moved to Boston, MA hitting the ground running right into
the music scene. By this time in their career they had
already opened for Taj Mahal, Leon Russell and Big Brother
and the Holding Co, had toured as far as San Francisco and
had released their second critically acclaimed album (Let it
Rise, 2008).

January 2009 found them plunging into a new era. In
collaboration with the talents of Jared Seabrook and Paul
Chase, two accomplished Boston musicians, Avi & Celia tapped
into a fiery synergy that eventually exploded; HEY MAMA was
born. The band has played more than 200 shows and festivals
throughout the Northeast and Canada, and have released a
third full length album self titled Hey Mama.

The Boston Globe calls them “Sexy roots swagger with
populist fire.” This fire has an undeniable presence in
their performances, which leave the audience sweating. The
band truly believes in freedom, and in every sense of the
word embodies their ideals while on the stage. Growing up at
a camp directed by Pete Seeger’s brother turned Avi on to
folk music and the power of a song. The idea that music can
help repair the world is an underlying philosophy of the
band. With this force in their voices, washboard and
distorted guitars, Hey Mama bears the torch for music of the
people: Can you feel it in your bones?

Jandee Lee Porter -
A Rising Star in Country Music.

A singer/songwriter born and raised in a small town in
the Connecticut River Valley, Jandee Lee Porter has
cultivated a love for music. From a very young age she has
been inspired by the power of song, both lyrically and
melodically. She is influenced by the everyday . .the little
things that often go un-noticed and the experiences she has
endured and observed through others.
Her deep country roots combined with influences from
other genres such as folk, blues, rock and soul are
intertwined to create an alternative sound that is none
other than her own. The fun loving and compelling lyrics are
interwoven with heart wrenching vocals to tell stories that
take the listener back to the time and place in which they
were written.

South East Vermont Community Action

Southeastern Vermont Community Action (SEVCA)

Agency Overview

The mission of Southeastern Vermont Community Action (SEVCA) is “to enable people to cope with, and reduce the hardships of poverty; create sustainable self-sufficiency; and reduce the causes and move toward the elimination of poverty.” SEVCA gives people the knowledge, tools, and support to break the cycle of dependence, and works to find solutions to the deep-seated problems of poverty, largely by empowering and collaborating with those whose lives are affected by it daily. SEVCA was created in 1965 as a part of the nationwide ‘War on Poverty’ and chartered as a Community Action Agency (CAA) – a private non-profit corporation, locally initiated and governed, and designated by local, state and federal officials as the ‘anti-poverty agency’ serving Windham and Windsor Counties.

SEVCA was founded on the belief that poverty need not be a permanent condition, that people can be empowered to rise out of poverty, and that the strength of our communities is measured by the quality of life of everyone within them. Guided by those values, SEVCA has served low-income people in this area for the past 45 years. During that time, the problems facing that population have been diverse, complex, and constantly changing; consequently, the agency has had to develop a broad and multi-faceted approach that reflected the breadth and depth of the problems and enabled SEVCA to be flexible enough to adapt to changing needs and conditions. The result is a wide array of programs and initiatives addressing the comparably wide range of poverty-related needs, in the areas of crisis intervention, affordable housing / homelessness prevention, home energy costs, business startup and support, education and skills training, early childhood development, family support, parenting, food and nutrition, affordable clothing / household needs, income budgeting / savings, information & referral, and service coordination.

SEVCA’s major programs are as follows:
Family and Community Services – provides crisis resolution services for housing, fuel, clothing and food; housing stabilization, Food Stamp outreach and nutrition education; budget counseling; information & referral; and case management services.
Head Start – provides a full spectrum of comprehensive early child development and family support services for pre-school children and their families, with the goal of enhancing the social competence, school readiness, and later academic success of disadvantaged low-income children.
Micro-Business / Asset Development – provides training and technical assistance for start-up, retention and expansion of small businesses for low-to-moderate income entrepreneurs; business counseling and mentoring to foster economic self-sufficiency through self-employment; Individual Development Accounts, providing matched asset building accounts enabling low-income individuals to achieve financial goals such as homeownership, education, and business start-up and expansion; and Tax Preparation Assistance, helping low-to-moderate income residents obtain income tax refunds and Earned Income Tax Credits.
“Good Buy” Thrift Stores – provide clothing, furniture, and household goods at affordable prices or at no cost through the use of vouchers for those who are unable to pay, as referred by SEVCA’s Family Services Program and other programs and agencies.
Weatherization – provides home energy audits, heating system repairs and replacements, and a full spectrum of energy conservation improvements at no cost to low-to-moderate income households, and at a reasonable price to higher-income households on a fee-for-service basis.

Our Place Drop-In Center
has been serving the greater Bellows Falls area as a daytime shelter and food shelf for over 18 years. In 2008, Our Place served a total of 5,828 breakfasts and lunches, and provided boxes of groceries to an average of 149 people monthly. In the last few years, over 400 individuals, farms, restaurants, markets, businesses, schools, churches, and community groups have contributed food to Our Place. These collaborations help ensure those we serve enjoy fresh produce, healthy bread, and other nutritious fare as often as possible. Your food donations can be dropped off in the bins at various locations each day of the festival and will help Our Place meet the increased need in 2009! THANK YOU ALL - and please enjoy our beautiful town and the festival!
